Ryan, what would you recommend for a beginner? I would want it for home security and I'd like something w/stopping power, preferably not an automatic.

Pistol or rifle?

If something long I'd say a shotgun.

If pistol that's a little harder. I really like the glocks. I figure that if I have to pull out my pistol it's not a good situation and I want as little as possible to flip or turn off to make it work. This is where the Glock or even the Springfield XD is great. Not that much for safeties. A revolver might do the trick as well.

Whatever you get please train, shoot, practice, train some more, shoot some more and practice a lot more with it.

Former military, and retired copper, so guns have a big place in my life. Can't say I collect, but I have several – a variety – and I shoot regularly. Most of my shooting is combat tactical, but I recently bought a matched pair of Vaquero .45s for Cowboy Action Shooting.

JMD, we have a friend who is the president of the local branch of SASS – Single Action Shooters Society. The Big Wolf's uncle is a member also. We have been to a few of the Cowboy shoots here in TN. They are a blast! And those guys – and ladies – are really an inspiration to watch. The Vaqueros are a favorite of mine too.
