OfflineI'm so excited /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I've never been. Every year my Union sponsors a trip
but it's usually in November, and I can never afford it.
Well, I just went to pick up Colin and my friend works
at the afterschool program. she asked if I saw they were
having a trip on May 22. i had…she asked me if i wanted
to go, her treat /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> . So hopefully it wont be full before we
get our reservations in *fingers crossed*
OfflineI remember my first time visiting in NYC, we were hanging around in the Village (up to felonious behavior to be sure, the first of many to come naturally) one night and I saw what I thought was a little dog skulking along looking pathetic in the shadows. I pointed it out to a friend of mine who was a veteran of the NY metro area who promptly pointed out that it was a sewer rat. As if on cue it scuddled over to a nearby sewer and disappeared from sight. This thing was about the size of a dachshund and I REALLY wish I was kidding about that. The only advice I could/would give you is the same advice someone gave me, be REALLY careful around Central Park and Washington Square Park and do not LOOK UP at the buildings. Apparently this is a "touristy" thing to do and you don't want to get "marked" by pigeons or criminals.

OfflineI have always wanted to go to NYC. It wont happen mr cb has been there truck driving and says he never left anything there and has no reason to go back. It sounds scary though the way you guys sound. I have heard that if you look for the sky, you are an easy target, just look like you belong there, something I couldnt do. I'm from Iowa for chripes sake, NYC is not in my reality! I am happy for you Heidi, have fun! Stay with other people!

OfflineHeidi, you will love it. I've been only once, but it is a wondrous city. I didn't go to the World Trade Center, but the Twin Towers were still standing.
I did a whirlwind tour of the (seems like) ENTIRE city in 12 hours. Long story. The Statue of Liberty greeted us in the morning coming in to the city. Chinatown, Little Italy, Central Park, Washington Square Park and the Village. Rode the subway. And I SWEAR I bought a pack of cigarettes from Joe Piscopo in a little tobacco shop! We wound up at a little Italian restaurant in the Village, Minetta's, and the folks put the Tennessee/Alabama football game on the TV over the bar while we had cocktails and dinner. (no, the DD didn't have drinks!)
One of the greatest things I remember is the lion statues in front of the New York City Library. It was the first night of the Mets/Yankees World Series. One of the Lions had on a Mets baseball cap, the other had on a Yankees cap. I know, out of all the things I saw, statues with baseball caps is one of the most memorable!
I guess we were lucky. All of New York was out on the streets, and we didn't see ONE horrible thing all day. Leaving New York I looked out of the van window and saw the Statue of Liberty all lit up. It was a great day.
Take the advice from everyone who offers it. Its smart to be safe. But don't be so safe that you don't enjoy this opportunity. I hope you have a great time!
OfflineI'll be cautious, but I'll still have fun /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
NYC gets a bad rap…if you look up the most dangerous
cities in USA it's never there (in the top 10). It's like any
other large city, dont be stupid and hopefully all will be
well.
But the advice about not stepping into the street is one
I never thought of…so thanks

Yeah, they don't/won't stop!
OfflineJust discovered that the King Tut exhibit is in New York…
I'm going to see if my friend wants to buy tickets for that
/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

OH! If you can get tickets for that, you MUST see it!
I saw it in the late 70's in L.A. It was amazing. I bought a 4 foot poster of the death mask that I had professionally framed in gold. It was one of few things I would NOT leave behind in my earthquake-wrecked apartment. It has pride of place as we speak in my living room.
Yes, New York and New Yorkers in general get a bad rap.
I know you will have a great time!
