And just like that Diet Coke is out of my life.

Aspartame is what they replaced the sugar in Coke with, giving us Diet Coke. I'm surprised that it is even allowed to be used knowing what some of the side effects are. I know a lot of diabetics drink it. I'm diabetic, but when I found out it can lead to complication with diabetes, well that coupled with all the other bad stuff associated with its consumption was just icing on the cake. I threw away all my Diet Coke this afternoon.

Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don’t ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don’t smoke or drink,

(7) don’t want to wear your clothes,

(8) don’t have to buy the latest fashions,

(9) don’t need a gazillion dollars for college and

(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ..

Well, it's funny, I'd cut WAAAY back on the coke zero and in addition to losing a bunch of weight already, I've found that I'm feeling alot better physically and emotionally…strange. Monkette likes that retro pepsi because it has real sugar in it, but as it's a limited time I guess that's end soon enough too. I just checked and so does Crystal Light…contain aspartame…bastages! I'm left w/water? oh well

Start reading your labels, people! Aspartame is in a lot more products than just diet coke. I was shocked when I became aware of this.

It's funny. I started gaining weight so I switched to artificial sweeteners in my coffee. My weight shot up, so since I quit the coffee I also quit the artificial sweetners and lost almost all of the weight, well back to where I was previous to the switch. I've also been keeping my eye on the high fructose corn syrup, it's everywhere as well.

I have always drank regular coke…sugar n all. Like TheNightGoat, I was gaining weight because there is more sodium in diet coke. My body doesn't tolerate salt very well.

After reading your post sithy, I wonder what other ingredients we take for granted that are really bad for us. /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

There goes another vice right out the window. I guess it's back to nothing but regular Coca-Cola

or tea with sugar. Who would have thought that artificial sweetner was evil in powder form? /angry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Coke offers a diet coke w/splenda that doesn't contain aspartame….i'm sure contains boodles of other carcinogens though. I think I may just switch to flavored unsweetened seltzer…lol or just start sqeezing limes into my water. I can pretend it's a real coke

I can't. There's nothing like a good fountain coke. Extra yum when they go heavy on the coke syrup. for me it's like a drug. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Didn't coke used to have trace amounts of cocaine in it?

Yes a long time ago. In fact alot of the folks in my mother's generation were ardent coca cola fans…can't help but wonder if that was a contributing factor…guess it didn't hurt. If Coke switched to the old receipe they'd definitely give Mnt. Dew a run for the money.

I'm probably more in your mom's generation than yours. /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I liked the the sign in Zombie Land.

Pepsi, when they're out of coke. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I can smell the difference between pepsi and coke, I've only had a pepsi once, that was enough.

It takes like coke gone just wrong, imo.

When I was a kid I would ride along with my sister to pick my mom up from work. She would bring me a coke from the vending machine in the old wax-paper cups with crushed ice. It was extra syrupy and extra fizzy… I haven't had a coke that good since.

The Big Wolf's been trying to get me off Diet Coke since before we got married. It is (supposedly) listed with DOD as a chemical weapon. Aspartame poisoning has been a study for a while. I dumped the Diet Coke and Equal…for the most part. I've been drinking my coffee for the past couple days with just half and half, no sweetener. Kicking my Diet Coke habit is as bad as trying to kick cigarettes. I used to consume almost 4 liters of it a day. Sometimes more. I've found that my craving for sweets has diminished in the last few days. Considering I have been diagnosed having overactive thyroid (Grave's disease) maybe I can get rid of the shakes now.

I've switched back to Coke, which is sweetened with the high fructose corn syrup (when coke stopped using raw sugar and switched after attaining the plants that make HFCS) and now it is the Diet Coke that leaves the bad taste in my mouth.

Here's what I will tell you about my experiences with aspartame. When I drink it, I can't sleep because I have severe pain in my hips. When I don't, it is as if my hips never hurt. I was diagnosed as having hip bursitis, and I had given up on ever getting a full night's sleep. At the time, I was drinking a few diet sodas per day. I quit drinking diet sodas or using any other artificial sweeteners, and within a week, the severe pain I've had in my hips for years was gone. It only comes back if I have a diet soda.

If you miss diet soda for the reason I do – which is the bubbles, you can get sparkling mineral water and add a little bit of root beer or vanilla flavored stevia flavors (you can get it at the health food store). It is an approximation, but for me it settles the bubble craving I have that leads me to drink soda.
