I love music and singing. I wanted to be able to play

an instrument so bad when I was a kid. In 4th grade

we were able to start lessons. I chose the Flute. I didnt

last long before the teacher "asked me to quit" /sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

It broke my heart. I also LOVE singing, but whenever

I do Lily, the cat, runs from the room and when I sing

in the car and the kids are there, I think it borders on

Child Abuse /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

I always thought it was so unfair that God bestowed a

love of music and singing but then gave me ZERO skill

at it /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' /> haha

But, I WAS smart enough to marry a very good musician.

And his fantastic musical genes were passed to my two

older sons. Both are great musicians. Matthew plays the

Trumpet and Nick plays percussion, his specialty is the

Marimba and he was even Section Leader his Senior Year.

I'm hoping that Colin also inherited his father's musical

genes because he did inherit my love of music. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

So, I'm curious how many people around here can play

an instrument or sing /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Like you, I have a great appreciation of those who have the skill to sing & play instruments, I possess neither ability. I think i've told the story here that I was singing at Midnight mass for Christmas and an old man in front of me turned around and told me "Please stop singing, God can hear you". I've never sung in public since.

First let me share a story. When Tanner was little, I would lie down next to him on his toddler bed and sing to him. One night, when he was about two, he gave me this soft, loving look. He took his pacifier out of his mouth, placed his hand on my cheek tenderly and said with such sweetness, "Mom – don't sing."

So clearly, I'm not musical in that way. I do play a variety of instruments though (some of them badly). I play piano, flute, piccolo, mandolin, percussion and recorder. I'd love to learn more instruments, but I just don't have the time. Tanner is musical, too. He plays saxophone, piano, percussion and a little bit of guitar. Jim – not musical. He begged for a French horn one year because he really wanted to learn to play. I bought a used one on e-bay. He and the kids now use it to make fart noises.

That is really sad to hear . . . a teacher discouraging a student like that. I'm sorry you had to have a horrible teacher like that Heidi.

I love singing, but can only carry a note occasionally. LOL. Like Karen, I have a son who often discourages me from singing, but I do it anyway. LOL

I have played the clarinet and piano, but haven't played in many years now. I still have a keyboard, but haven't broken it out in years.

My son tried out the Saxophone but didn't stick with it. He's wanted to play guitar for years, so I think I may have him take lessons. My daughter played piano when she was young and now plays guitar. She can chime in here if I missed anything.

Chad wants an electric guitar and an amp. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

I once, at a bar I howled The Little River Band's "Reminiscing" on Karaoke night. It was the only song I knew the lyrics to on the menu.

I've got pipes but that doesn't mean everything. A bunch of 50 something year old woman bought me drinks the night through. I never imagined that anyone was drunker than me in the place, for me to get up there and for anyone to actually enjoy it?

Music is such a subjective thing.

One man/woman's noise….

Little River Band? Really? I'd a thought you a natural for either a Stevie Nicks or Shakira tune being a goat & all! /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I attempt to sing only when alone, I realized long ago my singing voice is just a joyful noise. Long ago I attempted to learn how to play the guitar but could never gain mastery of my fingers.

I have been guaranteed that I will be a master of the 12 string classical guitar in as little as a

month. The infomercial that sold me the guitar and the discs was on a Telemundo channel

out of Mexico City. Some gringo dude wearing a black flat brimmed hat with dingleberries

around the edges made me believe I was also a 12 string virtuoso. In hindsight I can only say

that I became reasonably proficient in guitar repair. /blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I played the violin and viola, unfortunately my lack of support did not come from school, but in fact my own mother. I was great at it. I am told I can sing, but then again it's a lack of confidence.

In return, I have a son who can play tuba, trombone and now guitar. I encourage him where I wasn't.

That makes me angry that a teacher would do that at such a young age. She was probably an awful teacher to begin with. But what a blessing to have a husband and 2 children with musical abilities. Both my kids are in the school band. They both can also sing yet none of them will join a choir. /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

I am a first soprano. One of the few things in my life that I can do well. Musical genes run on both sides of my family.

Again I would love to give that ol' phart a piece of my mind /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' />
