Aww, poor Geddy. I actually used to HATE his voice. Drove me nuts. But I had a friend that was super into them- the more I listened the more I focused on the vocal line for what it was- and man, Geddy Lee is an incredible musician. I was so impressed with the music as a whole I got over the sound of his voice. And it really just is the sound cause the man has perfect pitch. Dead on. I figured being that talented he earned the right to belt out his songs and own them.

As for Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream and Other Delights, I was just listening to that album the other day- classic.

I remember the album cover on the Herb Alpert record. I bet I would enjoy it now, because I like that kind of music, but as a kid I thought my parents were nuts. I expected my son would feel the same way. Turns out he has much of the same stuff on his iPod as I have on mine. I've gotta hand it to him – the kid has good taste in music.

My parents were much older when they had me, but they were products of the big band/swing era and I don't really have a problem w/that kind of music in fact i find it to be quite soothing. But being the youngest of 7 kids and having an age gap of AT LEAST 9 years between me and everyone else, I certainly was exposed to a wide variety of music, everything from doo ****, r & b, jazz, rock n roll, disco, metal, classical et al. So there was a cross pollination going on by my exposing them to stuff that was more in line w/when I was growing up like new wave, punk, reggae, world music, etc. I was never much of a country music person because there was always such a "stigma" surrounding it. Now that could just be a Northern biased against the south but I just wasn't exposed that much to it. When I was a kid there was "Southern Rock" and that was stuff like Molly Hatchet, .38 special, Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Blackfoot and stuff like that. It seems that some of this "new" country music seems like a softer version of that stuff. As close to listening to country music I ever got was the Grateful Dead….and that ain't country by a long shot, usually. While they have some country-like music in their catalog (specifically stuff from the Workingman Dead/American Beauty era) that's not what they're known for. To me real country music is Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels, Willie Nelson, Conway Twitty, Mel Tillis and so on. I always enjoyed Willie Nelson, have seen Charlie Daniels in concert (still one of the best fights I ever um witnessed at a concert) and have grown to really enjoy Johnny Cash despite that creepy movie. The funny thing is a find myself going back to metal to sort of purge the system clean and do a reboot musically, it's strange. Almost like sand blasting the palate.

I almost bought this Whipped Cream Herb Alpert cd the other day, I'm guessing perhaps I should give it a try after all the positive reviews here.

I also wanted to weigh in on the Geddy Lee thing here. His voice was initially the thing that sort of put me off from Rush as well, as I became more exposed to their music, I learned to deal with it. Those guys have mad skills and "Moving Pictures" is definitely a desert isle disc for me. I can listen to that thing from beginning to end repeatedly (and have). One of my sisters feels the same way about Axl Rose, she has a "NO GUNS AND ROSES" rule in the car (my brother in law of course loves them…I"m not sure whether it's because she dislikes them so much or what, lol). I got the same thing about listening to Neil Young and Bob Dylan, got be in the "right place" to listen to that stuff.

Neil Young is another voice I can't stand in the least. It's funny about Dylan, though. He can't sing a note – my husband says he always sounds like he's suffering from chronic constipation and I can't disagree – but I still love his music. IMHO his songs just aren't the same when someone else sings them, even if they have a great voice.

My husband has the same criticism of Tom Petty, who is one of my all-time favorites, but he loves Neil Young. He also likes Journey. What can I say? To each his own.

I can't even relate to not liking Guns and Roses. Those guys rocked! I laugh every time I hear "I used to love her (but I had to kill her)". Priceless!

I can forgive Neil Young's voice…because of the music. I've always loved the singer/songwriters… Don't get me wrong, I love a good tenor but its not necessary for my listening pleasure.

Geddy Lee is a piece of Canadian treasure in my opinion…but I myself prefer the Fly By Night era.

I would marry Tom Petty if I were given the opportunity and The Big Wolf knows it.

I went to sleep almost every night of my high school days with Steve Perry singing on dare I say it VINYL.

I wholly agree with Monk. There's nothing like a good metal song to sweep the cobwebs from the attic.

ETA: pooperdooper, you don't even have to slow down More Human Than Human to two step to it. I danced to much quicker beats than that back in the day!

This of course is just for fun: http://community.fearnet.com/_…..V-Cribs-Ro…1181/40602.html

I love his music, but I can't say I fancy him. If you do marry him, I hope you invite us all over to your house for impromptu concerts. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

I always wanted to smoke a bowl with Tom Petty. If I ever have a terminal illness, that will be my Make a Wish foundation request. If they take 30 something year olds with a wish to smoke illegal drugs with a celebrity, that is.

The man is holding me down!

I'm very much a Metal Head.

The tips of my fingers are like stones from playing so much the last few years.

I basically like any hard to heavy bands. Even some mainstream metal bands like Disturbed.

Been working on "Stricken" and some other Dan Donegan licks here lately.

His syncopation and usage of open chords is awesome and fun to play.

I couldn't imagine playing in standard tuning anymore. Something about metal and drop tunings is so empowering.

If rap and pop was the only music available i might just poke my eardrums out with an icepick /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
