OfflineI don't know about any of you, but I actually used to enjoy watching the Oscars, but lately, meh. Just a couple quick observations.
- I would rather allow everyone a few extra moments to do thank yous instead of a crappy, campy intro song that DOESN'T WORK and is just terrible. Neil Patrick Harris needed an autotuner desperately he was waaaay off, but just do away w/that number entirely.
- What was up w/the cotillion dresses from the 50s that no one could move around in?
- Who applied Sandra Bolluck and Sarah Jessica Parker's makeup? Stevie Wonder? Terrible, made them both look like they needed an astringent to get their oily skin handled.
- Jeff Bridges congrats but has he turned into the Big Lebowski ?
- Tom Hanks just walked out and announced the winner of best picture but doesn't mention the other nominees? And how did he become a governor of the Academy? Did these people NOT SEE Bosom Buddies?
There was so much more, but I'll let the rest of you chime in.
Favorite moments….Tina Fey and Robert Downy Jr., Ben Stiller as a creature in Avatar and Steve Martin/Alec Baldwin hosting all very good.
***I'm sure there is a thread already around here for the Academy Awards, I'm just being lazy***

I'm the weirdo who loves movie award shows.
We have a party and vote on our favs, something we do each year.
Hosts, I enjoy Steve Martin. Not such a fan of Alec Baldwin, and didn't think they were paired well. Different comedic timing and delivery.
Their parnormal activity mock skit was a riot. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I think the reason, Tom Hanks didn't announce the nominee's was they were shown during the show. I remember other years they did this.
Yup, Jeff Bridges will always be "The Dude". I've seen him on talk shows during his career, and he hasn't changed a bit. Seems to be a real nice guy and a known to smoke the dope. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

The dresses, wow. I really like the old Hollywood glamour look, simple and elegant. Some of these dresses looked like they had growths or tumors attached to them.
Julia Roberts still stands out in my mind for her oscar in Erin Brockovich. The dress and hair, she was elegant and stunning.
Very happy to see Kathryn Bigelow win. The Hurt Locker was not a movie I jumped to see, but I was surprised. Wonderful movie!
I read the producer got banned from the oscars because he emailed members of the academy to vote for his movie. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' /> Not a smart guy.
Cris Waltz, Inglourious Basterds was my favorite performance of the year. I've watched the movie several times, just for him.
He took evil to a wonderful level, and quite funny.
T-Bone Burnett, wow! He has done so much great music for films, and his career in general is like a book of who's who.
Crazy Heart is on my list.
It was great to see John Hughs being remembered, and not his face just flashing on the screen.
Amazing body of work!
I also like the docu category. I watched the food and dolphin docu, they were very good. Now, I have a few more to add to my list.
I'm more of a docu, IFC film person.
Jimmey Kimmels show after the oscars was a hoot! /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I have to disagree. I think that Avatar should have received the award. The Hurt Locker, yay, a movie about a guy who dismantles bombs. I didn't find it to be all that great of a movie. However, to quote my roommate, "Go figure, a shitty war movie wins best picture over the highest grossing, most technologically advanced, and all around best film of the year: Avatar… I guess Hollywood really does believe in a rewarding unoriginal ****."

It was pretty much predicted it would go that way. I guess James Cameron isn't tremendously popular. I guess in the end, even the academy are still just kids in high school…
OfflineI thought the Hurt Locker was a great movie and deserved to win. War may be "unoriginal sh*t" and not very popular
to watch, but they did a fantastic job depicting what those brave men and women go through every day.
I haven't seen Avatar and probably won't, it's not really my cup of tea, but I'm sure it too was very good for what it was.
I was also glad to see both Sandra Bullock and Mo'Nique recognized for their work, they both did a great job.
And of course, like Symp, I loved all the old glam dresses. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I would of been happy with Hurt Locker, or Avatar winning. Loved Avatar and went to see it 3 times.
I saw the Hurt Locker in a different way. To me the movie was about a man with an addiction (being on the edge for the rush, being close to death) and the war was the just the back ground for it.
I know, I'm strange.
OfflineI rarely go to the movies…and I was in bed at 8:00 last night
/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I stayed up way too late watching last night, they didn't go off here until
after midnight. But I really enjoy that particular award show. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

OfflineI was reading an article over the weekend about some Vets from the Iraq War that were upset about how far from the truth the movie Hurt Locker was. An interesting article to say the least. It wasn't one sided at all, the writer even spoke with the director of the Hurt Locker and got her side as well.

That's so interesting, I heard just the opposite! /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
In any case, I'm just so thankful my husband was a jet engine mechanic in the AF and not an EOD troop!
OfflineI never saw Hurt Locker but have a feeling 20 years from now, they won't be studying it as being ground breaking or doing anything innovative. I think w/out all the technology Avatar has been "done" a couple dozen times before. That having been said, it's that technology that will be the touchstone to other things coming our way, I found it interesting that one of the teams used for effects in Avatar was the oscar winning crew out of New Zealand that did Lord of the Rings, Weta Workshop!

Star Wars didn't win an academy award, either. I compare Avatar to Star Wars in that it was a game changer.
OfflineI liked the Hurt Locker, I thought it was an interesting look at life in a war zone. Sure, it was about the guy who disarmed bombs, and he was addicted to the rush, but it brought a face to the veterans who have been and still are there. Here in America, we hear about it and most of us know someone who is or has been there, but this showed more then just the regular GI stories, It showed camaraderie among soldiers, how they really depend on each other for life. How one stupid mistake can kill all of them. It also showed other aspects of their lives as well. Im not a war movie fan, but I really liked it and it deserved the win. Avatar isnt one i cared for. Just couldnt get interested in it. to each his own I guess…
OfflineI really loved Avatar and given it's groundbreaking technology, and just how awesome the movie was in general, I wanted it to win.
We will watch The Hurt Locker in the next day or so.
Didn't get to see much of the show. But I did read about Ben Stiller and his bit. Would have loved to see him, as well as the bits from the hosts.
I didn't realize the director of the Locker was the ex of James Cameron. Kinda funny.
