Has anyone started a thread on this yet? I've looked in various places and haven't seen one yet – where would it be? (looks under bed) /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Why, it's right here. *points at thread *

The movie looks like it is going to be good, and I really like John Cusack.

That is what you are talking about? /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Personally, the movie doesn't look all hat great to me. Just another end of the world fear-mongering drama.

The actual 2012 myth? Well, it's not called a myth for nothing!

People always come up with ways to scare people. For what reason? Who knows, but it's very annoying.

Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try.

When this occurs, dissent becomes an object of surprise, if not resentment.

There are not too many original thoughts in movies these days. It's just entertainment… and some good effects and a good actor!

I am also looking forward to seeing this movie, even if it looks completely unrealistic and just a tad depressing. LOL

I think I'll love the effects and the drama of it all.

We (*hopefully*) have a 2012 podcast planned soon. And we're going to focus on 2012 in our December issue. As for the movie – I'll let Jim and the boys go see it – I don't have much interest.

I'm thinking it will be similar to that Dennis Quaid movie they always rerun on TBS or TNT – about the catastrophic weather changes – Morgan Freeman plays the president? I forget what it's called.

In regards to the actual 2012, I think it's myth. However, I started thinking about it in terms of the rising interest in the paranormal. The heightened interest can sometimes be linked to the turn-of-the century, catastrophic events, etc. This recent spawn of paranormal reality shows – when did it start? Was MH the first? I'm thinking now that it may be too separate time wise. I was wondering today what (if anything) sparked this public revival on tv – if it was anything other than clever marketing, or if it was in the making after the success of tv shows like John Edward.

The Day After Tomorrow! Yeah, I imagine it will be similar.

I just hope that people don't get crazy towards December, 2012.

The world is bad enough without some crazy bozo killing a bunch of people because he thinks tomorrow will never come, or some elderly person spending their retirement savings on crap, and then being featured as a human interest story on the local news because now they are broke, and don't know what they will do to survive.

The Mayan calendar does not say anything about the end of the world. Mayans believe that time and events are cyclical just like nature. 2012 represents the end of one epicycle of time and the beginning of a new one. If anything the Mayans believe that 2012 is a time for rebirth, not destruction.

The hype is correctly identified as fear mongering. Throughout history humans have picked arbitrary dates on the calendar to be afraid of. The first "millennial scare" was in 1000. They believed that the apocalypse was nigh. (oops). 2000 was obviously another biggie. (oops). Now 2012 is the next bogeyman because pop authors who do not understand archaeology want to write books that sell.

Eventually the world will end and whoever has the latest prediction will get to say "SEE! I TOLD YA SO!"
