OfflineI just saw The Book of Eli, and even though it is a good movie, I see it as a Christian propaganda film which pushes the idea of a Christian God making sure that his word, the Holy Bible, continues on. I was caught by surprise with a twist thrown in at the end, but ultimately even that adds to the idea that God is real and protects those who do his will.
It breaks down to Eli, played by Denzel Washington, and his divinely inspired mission to do the will of God, and take a copy of the Holy Bible in his possession West. He meets Solara, Mina Kunis, along the way, and together they travel ever West to their enigmatic destination, Alcatraz Island of all places. Gary Oldman plays a convincing villain as Carnegie, leader of the town where Eli meets Solara. I find it funny that Carnegie is more about books, but it plays into the idea of controlling the masses through their beliefs, which is Carnegie's reason for wanting possession of the Holy Bible that Eli has. The ironic twist at the end was a dose of sweet justice for the evil Carnegie. At last, even though he went through many trials and tribulations, Eli finally makes it to his goal with Solara in tow. An interesting movie, I think it is worth spending the money to see it at a matinee, or at least rent it when it comes out on DVD.
All in all, The Book of Eli is a very spiritual movie, in my opinion, with gratuitous violence thrown in for good measure, so it could have a wide audience appeal. I'm not sure if it will knock Avatar out of the top spot this week, but I think it has the best chance of any film out there to do this.
I give it 4 out of 5 Stars overall.
OfflineChristian propaganda Chad?
No way!
It was a good movie (a little too violent) that was making a statement about society and what people will do to control it. It's about the difference one person can make in the world.
Loved Denzel, Oldman, and Mila Kunis. All did a great job.
Loved the ending. The twist I did not see coming.

To each his own.

OfflineI loved this movie and was also floored at the end. I want to see it again just to watch it thru with that knowledge. Kind of like the Sixth Sense. I didn't mind the fact that the christian bible was the object that needed to be protected and delivered. I loved that it was placed on the shelf right next to the other important books. It wasn't given any kind of special treatment in comparison to the Koran. To me, that was more of a political statement rather than religious. Just my opinion!
OfflineI forgot to add my favorite gratuitous violence scene where the little old couple invite them in for something to eat but then it's clear what's for dinner! Who would have expected all the booby traps and the arsenal at their disposal? That was a great /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

haha that was awesome! cant trust anyone!
OfflineI can see why youd think that Chad, but it says more then that. It's about mans perseverance for what he believes. Sure he had faith and that was what kept him going, but even if you dont believe that God led him on this path, he had to have alot of faith in himself to do it all.

True on both counts. Maybe God is not bound by religion, and it is us who pigeonhole him/her into a certain role to meet our needs in life.

Offline***************************MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*************************************************
So was Eli blind???? It was great to see Jennifer Beal again….whatta feeling! I was listening to the movie while Monkette watched. So I didn't see who the old man was w/Madam Maxine….oh Dumbledore (Micheal Gambron not Richard Harris). Let's not forget that Gary Oldman is also in Harry Potter movies (that would bring the total up to three), Malcolm McDowell as the Museum curator and singer/songwriter Tom Waits as the engineer.
I didn't think it was christian propaganda, per se, BUT I did think it was a situation of the age old adage about how absolute power (as opposed to Absolut vodka) corrupts absolutely (the vodka does that too from time to time) from Canterbury Tales I believe. The lengths people in power will go through to manipulate the masses to their will to retain and expand their power.

Yes, I gathered that he was blind. It is one of those movies that you want to go back and watch again knowing what you now know. Not Christian propaganda but most definitely a cautionary tale about human nature and our tendency to corrupt and manipulate. Interesting tie in here with this thread and the thread about editing Mark Twain's written words in Huck Finn.

The thought had crossed my mind as well!
