OfflineAnyone seen the movie 1408? I watched it last night, very interesting….
1408: Unrated Version
(2007) PG-13
In this thriller based on a Stephen King story, writer and paranormal debunker Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is determined to demystify the ghostly events of room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, even though the clerk (Samuel L. Jackson) begs him to rethink his plans. Mike needs to write another book, and room 1408 may be his big ticket. But will he survive even one night?

Monkette & I saw that in the theater and were underwhelmed by it. We took turns dozing off during the film, she woke me up twice and I her once. Had potential and for us, just didn't deliver. Our first indicator should have been the PG-13 rating.

Yeah…i got up once or twice, but overall, it was better then some….I gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars…i've seen so many of these movies now, i can pretty actually predict what will happen in any particular scene….a good movie is one where I can't predict what will happen….
OfflineI thought aliens since it showed what looked to me like an alien but later shots showed what looks like robots catching missiles out of the air so I guess we'll have to wait for the movie.
Really it's just a remake of Alien Nation if anyone remembers that one.
Wasn't that w/Manny Potamkin & James Caan? It was a really cool movie that was thoroughly butchered by one of the networks attempting to convert it to a series.

OfflineI think we're going to watch Let the Right One In. Mindy reviewed it in the mag a while back.
It's a 2008 film based on the 2004 vampire fiction novel by Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist.
"The story centers on the relationship between a 12-year-old boy, Oskar, and a 200-year-old vampire child, Eli, of indeterminate gender. It takes place in Blackeberg, a working class suburb of Stockholm, in the early 1980s. The book focuses on the darker side of humanity, dealing with issues such as bullying, drugs, theft, pedophilia, prostitution and murder as well as the obvious supernatural themes."
I'll report back later.
I Liked this movie, very smart. I felt for the characters.
Heard, Hollywood is looking to do a remake already.
Too bad, it's a gem!
It did remind me of a certain teenage vampire movie, but this time for adults, and very well done.
Offlinei'll try not to take that personally.
as someone who has tried VERY hard to lose weight, it isn't easy.
at least not for me. i've used restraint, i have desire and i certainly
do know what it takes, you're right it's not rocket science. but it
doesn't mean that it's going to happen. i've been lucky enough
to have lost quite a bit of weight over the last 6 months, but i feel pretty
crappy that apparently i must not be restrained enough or have
enough desire since i cant seem to lose it all. i've hit a plateau
and no matter what i do i've become stuck.
Well that is a relief as it wasn't aimed at you personally and I consider you a friend. Perhaps I misunderstood your response about his (Peter Jackson's) willingness to admit he had the surgery. I was only trying to show the side that it is possible to do it naturally. Some of the stuff I read on him indicated that(by his own admission) he'd gotten into some really bad food habits during the production of LOTR and was now opting away from that by eating a different more regimented diet. I don't know you (beyond what I see here) or your struggles. I'm fairly certain that I mentioned that everyone's situation is different. But for me personally it was AND STILL IS a matter of me getting my impulses under control. I quit smoking cold turkey, for instance, almost 5 years ago. Even now the urge is great but it's psychological, not physical at this point. I realize that I will never have the body Madison Avenue tries to tell/sell everyone is the right way to be, but I do the best I can w/the genetics I've got.
In the future I will try to pay closer attention to the words I choose.

I agree completely. I guess I was being a little unrealistic. I thought the King/Jackson/Cusack would be something cool. It had most of the elements, just a few missing things. I would also concur about the predictability of movies these days. Naturally, I don't include literary adaptations, but some of these plot lines are a little obvious. Another movie that for me sort of falls into this category of cinema purgatory was M. Night's "Unbreakable" (ironically another SL Jackson show). I think this purgatory is best identified as the unfulfilled/unrealized potential category. Movies that really seem to have it going on and then….the transmission falls out.

Hi Gene!
It was okay. Not many Stephen King movies do it for me. Love reading his books.
My fav of his movies, Stand By Me. Very scarey, jk. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Shinning was fairly good, with a great direction.

OfflineBoth the Stand and It were pretty decent. Also Needful Things was good from what I remember.
Sometimes King's stuff doesn't translate so well to the big screen, but would agree that the Stand and It were decent hard to believe they were TV miniseries and quality at that….John Boy casting a little odd, but okay. The Myst was decent.

OfflineI never read the Mist if it was a book but I didn't care for it, particularly the ending.
I wonder if a remake of Salem's Lot would be any good. It might do well with all the other vampire shows and movies coming out.
I believe the Mist was a short story in the Skeleton Crew book, I think i heard somewhere that they'd done alternate endings. The theatrical ending was harsh.

OfflineWe have seen:
Star Trek
Transformers 2
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
I want to go see GI Joe, The Proposal, and 2012
I heard that there is a terrorist group after the Bruno actor for making fun of them and their leader in that movie….hmmm, I would be very concerned if I were him /unsure.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
