I completely agree. We hardly ever actually go out to see movies anymore for that very reason- it has to be something reallllly special, (Like "Lord of the Rings" or "Avatar 3D" special.) Oh yeah, and we only go during matinee times, too, unless it's a cool little art house type place. We have some awesome places here in Portland that show indie films or old movies or second run stuff for cheap, and they've ripped out every other row of seats and put in long tables and serve pizza and pitchers of beer. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

	That is the matinees! /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

We usually go all out when we go.

I know it's expensive to buy popcorn, a drink, and sometimes candy, but the movies wouldn't be the same to me without them.

Wow, I just reread what I wrote above and it makes me sound like a real elitist jerk. The point I was trying to make was that it was nice to have a multiplex theater of non mainstream offerings that had a mature audience demographic. It becomes a real hassle spending a small fortune to go to a theater to watch a film where it's like going to a high school assembly an hour before holiday break is set to begin.

I've told this story before but long before I met Monkette and moved to the Left Coast, I used to go to this place called the Ritz Theater in Voorhees, NJ and it specialized in foreign and independent films. Do you know when you're sitting there at the Oscars and have never of these films that are nominated...this place showed those movies. So I used to see the coolest films there, while you may not see the Matrix (say), you'd probably see the Lord of the Rings. They charged a little more for the seats but the amenities were great. No kids under 15 allowed in the BUILDING. Under 18 have to sit with their parents in the same theater, none of this going to a different screening. If your cellphone goes off or you're talking on it, the biggest usher you've ever seen comes in and escorts you out of the building. The floors were so clean you could eat off them, they regularly had double features and thematic movie nights. They'd run classic films in black and white (like Hitchc0ck films and Casablanca etc) and have film study discussions. I've been told by folks still in the area that a long time ago they had to start showing main stream stuff because of dwindling revenue, so now they get the Disney stuff and action films etc....it was a nice haven from all that nonsense sorry to hear that it went the way it did. While I'm sure that it is purely an economic reality of the times, for me personally, I view it as a further dumbing down of the culture. Like the heathens have breached the Citadel, though I'm not a resident of the area any longer, a part of me really feels violated. Now that I live in the SF Bay area I don't doubt that I could see some of those "art house" films here, I'm just not crazy about the neighborhoods some of this theaters are found. OH WELL
