OfflineMonkette and I had been seeing coming attractions for this at our local movie theater as part of the PRE trailer propaganda push and decided to give it a try. Anyway with summer we've fallen behind dvr viewing and decided to start watching.
Off topic let me say for the record that this show features HANDS DOWN one of the greatest actor (actress in this case) names EVER….Moon Bloodgood (so help me the next internet ID I create will be this).
I will only talk about what I've seen (3-4 episodes) and my initial impressions. There is potential here to be really good, however, the "Steven Speilberg/Dreamworks Television" brand doesn't grant immunity from possible pitfalls such as cliched writing, hammy acting and restrictive budget. Right now, Monkette and I both enjoy the show, but they really sort of need to get to the point with the aliens, why are they here? Did they just see a galactic rest area ahead sign and decide to stop in to sample the local wares??? Lack of true development of the aliens bothers me right now.
The story we've got so far is that aliens showed up and promptly wiped out the world's military forces, satellites and knocked out global power grids. They then established strongholds around the major cities and systematcially began wiping out the human populations, killing the adults and enslaving the young by means of a bio/mechanical device know as a "harness". They've shown the biological aliens (aka "Skitters" or "Cooties" yes, like the game) and their mechanical side kicks (the Mechs).
So for now, not bad, but this could easily go south fast. It's already been renewed for a second season soooo we'll see what happens.
In a side note I'm really curious about a couple of different things…."Terra Nova" which is also a SS/DWTV production is coming out (came out) on the channel that shall not be named at the same time AND them moving the show's time slot up against True Blood. Odd very odd.

OfflineActually I was thinking about starting a thread on this show when it started….but…..leave it to Monk to…when the series is over.
Considering the actual number of sci-fi shows on TV is abysmal I will take almost anything. Skies is a good enough series to have gotten me to watch the 8 or 9 weeks its been on.
I don't recall hearing (but then again I may have missed it) the reason they came here. Only that they didn't think we would resist.
It is a good series that I will watch again. Unfortunalty it being a cable channel….season 2 starts summer of 2012….1 freakin year away. And Networks wonder why viewer ship drops off.

This is the problem I've noticed as well. The Sopranos, True Blood, V, Fringe etc all these programs that get decent ratings or mild interest. Now with sci fi stuff, I sort of get it because of the special/visual effects cgi etc. That stuff takes time to do, but it's just so aggravating, but yeah. They wonder about the "drop off". That's why, people just get tired of waiting. We still have two episodes to go to be "current".

OfflineSome times I wonder that if they say CGI taked to long and is to expensive then maybe they should go back to scale models. If done right and with the advent of hi-def then they will look just as good as cgi…maybe better. It could cut down on the wait time.
OfflineI have this show on my dvr but have yet to watch it. I have been falling behind in my dvr, I still have episodes of V. I will watch and let you know.

OfflineI watched most of the series, it wa snot bad, good enough to keep me from coming back to watch it…i missed a little bit of the beginning, whats the deal with the mechs? Just a defensive mechanism for the skitters? I assume unmanned?
Yes, they seem to be autonomous mechanical fighters. I won't say more then that for those who have to catch up. And then there are the Skitters… /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Another reason we need a "like" button on this forum! I am on a Skittles kick right now. I must have them every day.
As far as Falling Skies – I missed DVRing the marathon Sunday, but watched the two hour finale. Not sure if I am satisfied with the ending for this season. I'm just intrigued enough to catch it next year, but disappointed it is a year away.
ETA: I have watched the full series, but apparently missed some key info in the process.

I got into this series towards the end and really like it. Like you I am not thrilled that I will have to wait soooo dang long for season 2.
I have the same problem with Game of Thrones and In Plain Sight. To me the seasons are getting shorter and the time to wait for these new seasons seem a lot longer. /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I think these long delays are a reflection of the reality tv craze. They don't need writers or casting etc for this stuff and all the money they get for product placement and advertising goes right to the networks. The writer's strike didn't help either. The problem that happens is that you have to go through the whole production of meetings to decide what show concepts to run with. Once they decide on the shows then they have to find the acting talent to plug into the shows. Now they've got talent and story concept, so they have to write the episodes. They don't want to go full tilt on these new shows because of the pure expense and if the show tanks then they've got a bunch of episodes in the can that no one will bother to watch. So they do these "mini" seasons (6-8 episodes) and when they see a show's taking off then they launch back into production again to do a full season (I think on a network like TNT, the maximum length of a season might be 12 episodes.) I think the fact that it's a science fiction show is a double whammy. Historically scifi doesn't fair as well on television. Also, it's an added expense with special effects which take longer to work on. For instance an episode of Family Guy (animated cartoon) takes a full 9 months from table read to animation to air date (for the record, South Park doesn't take as long as the animation is much more primitive and done domestically, they can have a 72 hour turn around time). I used to have the box sets for Friends and they were doing 20-25 episode seasons, but these are half hour shows with no special effects. If they were hour long that would cut the season in half. I'm hoping that they manage to get the show to us faster, if not, this thing will die quickly on the vine like V. I'm not justifying it, because I'm just as frustrated with the delay as most, but I understand it….begrudgingly.

Unfortunatley people need visual candy to watch Sci-Fi now. Granted there were SFX throughout sci-fi but people now would rather have flashy effects over story. The Twilight Zone didn't have flashy effects but great stories and it has lasted in re-runs for 50+ years. Can anyone say that about any other show? Attention spans are not what they used to be.
