Oh, there are SO many!

One that my brother made me sit through umpteen times when I was a wee lass as one that was broadcast on "Chiller Theatre." It was a 1958 classic called "The Crawling Eye" which starred Forrest Tucker. When I look at it now on YouTube, I laugh. But, it sure scared the crap out of me when I was little.

Another great one (another of my demon brother's favorites) was "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954). Geez, how fake it looks now.

Two of my all-time favorites, to this day, and way ahead of their time are: "Forbidden Planet" (1956) and the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951). Oh, and the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956).

Seems a pattern has developed here. These are all from the 50's.

What are some of your favorite classic horror films?

I forgot "The Uninvited" (1944). This is one of the best ghost films I have ever seen. I still love when it comes on TNT or TCM. It is definitely a classic starring a young Ray Milland.

OMG! GettysburgLady, every Saturday night my brother and I would beg my mother to let us stay up and watch "Chiller Theatre" with "Chilly Billy Cardilly". It came on station WIIC out of Pittsburgh. It started every Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. and had 2 features. The first movie was usually a B movie, and the second was always the better one. WOW! That takes me back, thanks. I remember "The Crawling Eye" and the others you mentioned. True classics. Thank you for that memory, those were truly good times.

LOL, JD! I didn't think anyone would know "The Crawling Eye"!

Thanks to my brother, I have seen every old horror and war movie every filmed. He made me watch them with him. Obviously, he was just afraid to watch them himself.

Another one was the original "The Abominable Snowman" (1957) with Forrest Tucker and a young Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin from "Star Wars"). You never saw the Abominable until the last few minutes of the movie. But, the sound it made over those snow-capped mountains was enough.

The scariest movie I ever saw as a kid was The Pit and the Pendulum with Vincent Price.

Scariest movie i ever saw had Vincent Price as well. I just don't know the

name of it? It was about an Egyptian King and Vincent Price had to travel

the river of the dead to gain immortality. It was so long ago I can't even

remember all of it. When I was a kid it had me staring at the whole movie

with just one eye open and the other squinted so far shut that it gave me a

headache.

I love the adaptations of Poe's work…Vincent Price was always in them!

Basically my faves are all of the ones Carolyn mentioned…along with Earth vs the Flying Saucers.

Tarantula was another Early Show classic shown in the afternoon. God I love old tv programming! Movies in the afternoon!

And I love, love, love anything that was riffed by Mystery Science Theater 3000. Classic B movies with a twist!

Great Thread!

For me, I'd have to agree w/some of the previous choices though they are WAY before my time…namely, the original "Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". Can't believe no one said "The Blob" or "The Fly" or "The Invisible Man". Those old Hammer Draculas and Karloff in "The Mummy". For anyone so inclined I found the first two Hellraisers to be quite insane…especially after a few hits of blotter alone in a darkened room. But that's me, I'm twisted!

Day of the Triffids

Is that those things that Shatner encountered in the original star trek that later found a home on his head?

Darn, I was too late to mention day of the triffids. I really liked the original The Blob.

For the record someone ought to clarify what makes a "classic" horror film classic.

Is it strictly the age of the film? Black & white versus color? Gore over suspense/well written plot? Theme or actor? Just curious!

Nefertiti, regina del Nilo

I saw this on IMDB.com and thought this might be the one!

When I was a kid, The Thing, The Blob, The Shining, and The Exorcist (see any patterns here? LOL) all really scared the crap outta me.

More recently, The Ring (and still the pattern continues hahaha).
