OfflineThere has been alot of talk recently of uniting all paranormal researchers for a common cause. However, it is almost always prefaced by the statement that we are all in this for the same reason…I can't help but to say to myself how presumptious that statement is. That statement is often followed by "we are all trying to find proof of an after life" or "ghosts". I'll think about that and then conclude…no, that's not why I am doing this. If I already knew that ghosts existed, I would have my answer and wouldn't spend so much darn time asking the questions. I'm in this because I have witnessed a few things that I have been unable to explain and I would like to explain them. Now whether I conclude that there are ghosts or there are not ghosts – the answer doesn't really matter to me, as long as I can find an answer – that hasn't happened yet. My situation may be different than yours and I think that there is no better way to demonstrate that then for me to ask all of you…why are you studying/researching/investigating the paranormal? What is you goal in all of this? (by the way… this isn't a right or wrong kind of question)
OfflineFor me, it's simple. I work in EMS, used to be a firefighter so I like helping others. This for me combines the two factors into one. I've always enjoyed learning about ghosts and the paranormal and if I can help put someone at ease while finding some sort of evidence then I feel it's better for me. I'm not out to convince the world, just the client. Matter of fact if I get evidence of a ghost walking in front of my camera one day, I'd doubt I would release it for the masses. This is a hobby to me, it's not a job or anything. If it became that then I wouldn't want to do it anymore.
OfflineI do it because I am insatiably curious. I want to know stuff. The paranormal, to me, is one area where we still no so little that there are lots of questions that remain. That is probably the main reason. There are other reasons, as well. People who have died, personal experiences, wondering about death, etc. But, for me, the main one is just curiosity. I want to know stuff. Always have. Always will.

Ah – yes – insatiable curiosity. I left that one out – that is definately an attribute you and I share!
OfflineBecause curiosity most of the time gets the best of me. I believe ghosts exist (for all thats happen to me including seeing things I have no other choice but to believe). I think ghosts are just interesting. Also, the history! Who they were, when they were, what happened to them. Its why I like ghost tours even if I find no ghost. You still get the history and a time pasted. Plus, I find it fun. Not haha fun, but fun (not sure how to explain it. I feel like funs the wrong word but have no idea what would be the right one).

Is it completely lame to just say DITTO to this answer? For me, insatiably curious about sums it up. I love learning about new things and the paranormal field is so vast and interesting and always changing and growing. /biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

OfflineBecause I've experienced a lot of paranormal activity, and I know how bad things can get either with the activity itself, or psychologically (wondering if you are crazy or not), and I know that sometimes activity can keep you awake to the point where you are getting sick from the lack of sleep. And having experienced this myself, I want to do my best to prevent others from going through that. Also, the curiosity thing as well, and the fact that I want to know what causes someone to stay here after death, and what could trigger activity.
OfflineAs I expected…many of us have a variety of reasons for studying the paranormal. So it isn't surprising that there is so much debate in the community. Many of us have different goals and therefore will have different approaches in obtaining those goals. This is something that I think many of us forget. While, as in any large community, there are certain individuals who simply want to make trouble – I don't believe that is the case with the majority. I believe that by large, most disagreements and conflicts arise due to different objectives. I think it would behoove us all to keep that in mind. I'm not saying this based on anything I have read in this particular forum – I'm speaking of the general discussions I have participated in, as a whole.

DITTO! I have no problem of being thought of as lame. I have been called worse. Insatiably curious is why I chose the career I did and why I am an investigator and not a ghost hunter.
I also don't limit my studies to ghosts. I study everything considered paranormal to include everyone that considers themselves as part of the Paranormal Community and who posts their opinions, photos, etc on the internet. People to me are the basis for all things paranormal. That's where it all starts IMO.
I have to say however, that I can't group myself with the majority. I am not in it for any reason than my own selfish ones. Sounds cold? Maybe but it's honest.

Doesn't sound cold to me. My interest is pretty self-serving, too. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> Isn't curiosity almost always self-serving? I'm not adverse to it leading to good things for others, however.

I don't mean to start a debate (as this statement almost always does) but I'm of the mind that almost everything we do is – to some degree – self-serving.

yep. I am of the belief that it is virtually impossible to completely separate from the "I" that makes up our ego. Because of that, everything we do and choose comes from the viewpoint of serving the "I." Even the most altruistic acts most likely have an element of "I" in them. Maybe not always in the moment, but usually before or after the fact we bring "I" into it. The only way to be totally separated from "I" would be to live completely in the moment in every breath. Even then, there would be self-serving acts from time to time because we have to protect "I" or it will cease to be. All of this is my way of saying that the ego protects and nurtures itself at all costs.
Are we our egos? Nope. But do we very often allow our egos to run the show? Totally. And it is our egos that are the self-serving parts of ourselves.

I like the way you think!

I have addressed this in debates over EVP's and a few other areas in the past. Could our egos be hindering some of the work we do?
I think it may and in some cases our egos may even be guiding us in a direction away from the answers we seek.

Not only do our egos hinder any semblence of objectivity in our research, but our zeal as well. I know that I am guilty of this. At times I find myself so anxious to find something – it often compromises my objectivity. For me, trying to balance enthusiasm and objectivity is the most difficult aspect of this endeavor.

Isn't that the truth? I know it is true for me. Ego and agenda are my two biggest blocks to objectivity.
