I need some advice.

My niece is waking up with scratches on her arms and legs at both of her parent's houses. She is sleeping now in pants and a long sleeved shirt and has filed her nails down to the quick to make sure that she's not doing it to herself, yet the scratches still appear on her overnight. A few days ago 3 deep scratches appeared on her arm in broad daylight without any explanation.

Does anyone have any experience with this phenomenon or any advice about what to do to stop it? She is scared to death and I sure don't like it either. It especially worries me that it follows her from house to house rather than being limited to one location.

Thanks!

My first thought as it follows her would be have someone sleep with her to make sure she doesnt thrash around in her sleep. I have a friend that used to do that and would end up with scratches and bruises. He was baffled until he found out how much he moves in his sleep.

Are there cats around? How do they know it appeared in the day? I know that sometimes I dont notice things when they first happen so Im wondering what happened.

Now if it really is something paranormal, it could be attached to her if it follows. Or it could be in the area depending on how close together the two houses are. If this is so, id recommend a personal cleansing and blessing. As well as some meditation and personal thought empowerment to rid herself of the fear. Whatever it is will only feed on this.

I hope you all find out whats going on and solve it quickly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don’t ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don’t smoke or drink,

(7) don’t want to wear your clothes,

(8) don’t have to buy the latest fashions,

(9) don’t need a gazillion dollars for college and

(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ..

Our granddaughter had this 'happen' – So we put a video camera in her room at night and sure enough, even with protective clothing and even cotton gloves .. she was doing this in her sleep. She even took the gloves off an hour or so before she started to scratch.

We washed everything down and found it was the fabric softener .. the perfume of it was the cause. We changed the fabric softener to non-fragerance and sure enough it stopped.

Hope you find the answer.

Respectfully ….

This happened to me. To this day I have no clue what caused it.

I would wake up in the morning with scratches on my back. I know

I couldnt have done it myself because I couldnt even reach most of them.

The freakiest one was one day I got up, not scratches. Got dressed

completely (including a bra). When my son went for his nap I laid down

and fell asleep. When I woke up I could feel a burning pain on my chest.

I looked and there was a deep scratch starting near the top of my breast

bone, it travelled down between my breasts and under the bottom band

of the bra and went for about an inch below it. Usually the scratches werent

painful, but this one stung for the whole day. I dont know HOW I could have

done a scratch like that myself.

It stopped happening when I moved to a new place,

it never happened to anyone else that used that room

in my family

Thanks, everyone. I honestly wouldn't be concerned if it were normal-looking scratches, but they appear as three, very close together marks and they almost look like they were made with a needle or a pin. There are cats in one house, but I can't see how a cat could scratch her repeatedly and not leave the 4th claw mark at least some of the time. Having three cats myself, I am very familiar with cat scratches and the claws on her scratches are too close together and there are only three. I actually wondered if they might be rat claws, God forbid, but I think they also have 4 claws.

As for knowing about the one that appeared during the day, she was blowdrying her sister's hair straight and had a brush in one hand and a blow dryer in the other. She could see her own forearm as she was working and there weren't any scratches on her until she suddenly felt a burning sensation and then the three marks appeared. It really scared her and her sister. The other odd thing about these marks is how quickly they heal. They go from bloody to gone in an amazingly short time.

I experienced scratches like this one time myself. My husband and I were staying in a bed and breakfast and I woke up with three bloody scratches across my collar bone. They looked exactly like cat claws, but too close together and only three marks. The truly amazing part of this story is that the scratches went from bloody welts around 9 am to completely gone by noon. There weren't even any pink marks left by then. The rapid healing freaked my husband out way more than the scratches themselves did. I was more freaked out by the scratches, to be honest, but since we weren't spending the night in that B & B again I didn't worry too much about it. It's different when it's happening frequently and in different locations. It's also different because she's a scared 16 year old and I was a grown woman.

well another couple of ideas.

Take a magnet and move it up and down the bed slowly, to see if there is any pull or tug.

Take a balloon over the bed, press down just enough so that pin-**** will pop it, and roll it up and down the bed and pillow.

*A friend told me about the above. They found left-over "raw material" in the mattress cover.*

Just an update on my niece's situation.

I am happy to report that no scratches have appeared on my niece at all since they moved out of the house that they lived in with their mother. They aren't happening at either house now.

She's still sleeping on the same mattresses with the same linens. The only thing that has changed is her mother's house.

I don't know what caused the scratches or why they stopped. I'm just happy that they have stopped. Yay!

Thanks for all of the advice and support from the PUG family. It really helped to have people to talk to about it.
