OfflineI'm not sure if this is the write place for this….
This is probably common knowledge, but I learned something in Psych the other day that can definitely be applied to the paranormla field. We were learning about the brain and how it processes information. The professor put this picture up on the projector screen that had a plus sign in the middle of a circle of red dots. The dots would light up one by one, going around the circle. She told us to follow the dots as they lit up. We did that, and then she told us to look at the plus sign, but watch the dots light up in our peripheral vision. When we did this, the dots appeared green. Then she told us to just stare straight at the plus sign; the dots seemed to disappeared altogether. So I was thinking, and I realized that this could be applied when people are seeing things out of the corner of their eye, and thinking it is paranormal. We don't see things as they really are when we see them in our peripheral. For instance, one time I thought I saw a woman in a pink sweater out of the corner of my eye, but when I turned no one was there and there was nothing pink around. I probably just saw something else, and my mind misinterpreted it. This leads me to be very skeptical about reports of seeing things out of the corner of someone's eye. It probably is not what they think it is.

OfflineYou raise a very valid point. This is why people shouldn't put too much stock in those kinds of glimpses.

OfflineThat deal about staring at something and having it disappear is absolutely strange. When I was Aircrew in the Navy, they always told us to keep your eyes moving simply because of this fact. Staring up at a star long enough & it'll seem to disappear, too.
An easy test you could do right now to check out your peripheral vision is to hold your hand out in front of you, arms extended, waving your fingers (say hi! to yourself! lol); move your arm (continuing to wave your fingers) to the side, and keep looking straight ahead (but focusing on your hand). Neat little trick to show you how much you actually lose in detail, so its no wonder people always think they see "shadows" from the corner of their eyes!
The corner of the eye thing and seeing ghosts… It's also a perfect example of why video is so important (to me, anyway).
