I have been digging around on the Internet and in books for a while, and asked a few people, exactly what is a fairy. I can't seem to get a clear (or at least semi-clear) definition out of anyone. I'm actually writing a book currently called Para-Dictionary, and this is one of the last definitions, which I am having trouble with. Anyone have an idea of a relatively clear definition? Or an idea of someone who might know?

Thanks in advance!

Sam

well, not sure but i know that GH said

they had different meanings in different places.

like here we think of a cute little female fairie, like tinkerbell

but in Ireland they are mean creatures that dont like humans

invading their space.

Someone on one of the witchcraft boards I belong to just talked about fairies and elementals. I'll see if I

can find it and send you the info.

I have an idea that the phrase "weaker sex" was coined by some woman to disarm some man she was preparing to overwhelm. ~Ogden Nash

Thanks to both of you for replying.

I know there are going to be several different definitions, but I'm looking for one (or a few) clear ones, or the most common/popular two or three.

My definition: A small spirit that is responsible for watching over a section of forest or woods. They can be overprotective when defending their territory if they believe it is threatened. Mainly believed to exist in the Great Britain area.

I always viewed it as a blanket term, or maybe the name of the overall species of creatures. I know I lot of people will include creatures like goblins and gnomes as fairies too.
