Doing my research for the vampire part of the June article, I ran across a fact that I found very interesting. One method the Eastern Europeans believed could slow a vampire was to spread poppy or millet seeds in the coffin of the suspected vampire and throughout the cemetary. They believed that vampires had an obsession with counting, and by doing this, they would count every seed before attacking anyone, giving the village time to detect and destroy it. I immediately thought of "The Count" of Sesame Street fame. Did someone really do the research on that character, thus creating a vampire who loves to count, or was it just coincidence? Hmmm….. /dry.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

I haven't seen True Blood or read or seen Twilight. I've heard raving reviews about True Blood, as well as both good and bad reviews about Twilight. I'd like to see/read both!

I love reading vampire fiction and I really enjoyed HBO's True Blood.

Twilight was a YA novel and I think that shows in the movie. Probably why it's so big with the tweenies and teenies, lol.

I write books. I take pictures.

According to some of the same mythologies, vampires are compulsive not only counting but compelled to untie knots.

Hmm, on the Count. Interesting thought. Could be. I always thought they played off the title of nobility and Count = counting.

I was under the impression the Anemia was to blame for the whole Vampires sucking myth? Vampires or anemia sufferers needed iron rich blood and shunned sunlight for obvious health

related reasons ie… sunlight hurt their eyes. I guess, this was just something I remembered

reading awhile back that may have just been a stab at an explanation? /mellow.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':mellow:' />

I know porphyria has been mentioned as a cause in several of the sources I've researched. I just went and grabbed this as a quick definition of the disease.

"These poor souls are extremely sensitive to sunlight that can easily result in burns and abrasions, and so they prefer darkness. They suffer from acute attacks of abdominal pains, vomiting and loose stools. Their urine may have a purplish-red color leading some to wrongly believe that it results from drinking blood. Those afflicted may have increased hair growth, and with repeated damage, their skin tightens and shrinks. When this occurs around the mouth, the canine teeth appear to be more prominent, and suggestive of fangs. At other times, it causes depression and affects the brain to produce peculiar behavior. It is probably no surprise that garlic makes all the symptoms worse. Porphyria is a misunderstood condition that has affected the likes of Mary Queen of Scots and King George III." – source

I saw the first epi of True Blood. It looked to be a good show. The Twilight books I read. I can see why they have captivated teen agers. I read them because I wanted to make sure they were okay for Tanner to read. They were – although really it is just a big rescue fantasy. Not my type of thing, but I can see why the books are popular.

Porphyria…. That's worlds away from anemia. I stand very corrected and refreshingly enlightened. The symptoms read more like a curse than a disease? Thank you MichellePillow !

No problem. It's good to know the useless knowledge floating around my head can be good for something, lol. Though, I don't think you were far off with anemia. I went and looked up that and other medical explanations to vampires:

ANEMIA

"Derived from the Greek word for "bloodlessness", anemia is a blood disease in which the red-cell count is unusually low. Red cells are the carriers of oxygen throughout the body. When a person suffers from anemia, their symptoms are caused by inadequate oxygen. These symptoms may include:

* A pale complexion

* Fatigue

* Fainting spells

* Shortness of breath

* Digestive disorders

There are three main causes of anemia: disease, heredity, and severe blood loss. Over the ages, a person suffering from these symptoms may have been under suspicion of a vampire attack….. " -- SOURCE

Catalepsy

"Catalepsy is a disorder of the nervous system that causes a form of suspended animation. It causes a loss of voluntary motion, a rigidity to the muscles, as well as decreased sensitivity to pain and heat. A person suffering from catalepsy can see and hear but cannot move.Their breathing, pulse, and other regulatory functions are slowed to the extent that to an untrained eye, it would seem as though they were deceased. This condidtion can last from minutes to days. Before 20th century medicine came along, there were few diagnostic tests that could be done on a body to ensure it was in fact dead, and so it is possible and even likely that persons suffering from catalepsy could have been declared dead prematurely. Embalming a corpse before burial is also a 20th century idea, so it's very possible that these bodies were declared dead and buried while the person still lived. Upon recovering from their catalyptic state, the person would try to dig their way to the surface. Many myths may have arisen from this single condition alone." --SOURCE

True Blood, season two, tonight. I'm addicted.

I like there are shape shifters involved, also.

This is a great show.

Finished reading twilight series, seems for the younger set.

I'm looking forward to the new season, but I'm impatient and don't want to have to wait in between episodes, lol. I just rewatched the last one in the On Demand feature.

I don't know, after absolut, that much beer and tequila, I'd be inclined to crown myself royalty, lol.

Doh!

It's all in the coup training manual.

1. After inserting yourself as supreme ruler you

must appoint influential , prominent people as

high ranking cabinet members. This will solidify

your position in the hierarchy structure.

2. Liquidate all people refusing to accept your

generous offer of influence and power.

3. Send lowest ranking cabinet member for more ice and

Crown Royal. ( send armed escort of loyal henchmen

along with them ) /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Now, does it have to be Crown Royal? /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

No actually the manual just says: " Insert your favorite adult beverage here."

It also gives you a choice in the henchmen clause. The choices, if I remember

correctly, are BFF's for female insurgents and compadres for the Bubba club

among us. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Laugh' />

Awesome! now, does it have to be one beverage, or can I just make the first order of state business the acquiring of a bar? As you can see, there might be a reason why I'm not in charge, lol
