I do have to admit, there are a few things that mystify me about the footage. One is definitely the hernia. The other is that I'm not aware that anyone has ever been able to reverse engineer the "suit".

Yeah – there were rumors about John Chambers, but there was also a guy named Phillip Morris who claimed that the costume was of his design, however, it had been modified. Morris claimed to sell an ape suit to Gimlin via mail order in 1967.

A man named Bob Heironimus claimed to be the guy who actually wore the suit. According to Heironimus, Patterson offered him 1000 to wear the suit for a bigfoot film.

There are discrepancies, however, in the description of the suit given by Heironimus and Morris.

Patterson/Gimlin film 1967 -- Planet of the Apes 1968 -- Chambers designed the costumes for the movie……..

Maybe a few designs were looked at………

Maybe a 'test run' for the suits??

Quick update – I am working on an interview with a guy who claims to have totally debunked this footage. My hope is that we can do a podcast so that JD can be involved in the interview, as well. Could be interesting. I'd say look for it after the first of the year.

I believe this was a hoax. I mean, there is no real reason for this guy to even have a video camera with him that day- but putting that aside- wasn't there a guy who came out and said he was the man in the costume? I forgot his name but I'm sure you could find it online somewhere, he fully claims that he was the man in the suit, and ironically was not putting on a fake looking walk, he just walked weird I guess? I don't put a lot of trust in this film and I do not believe in bigfoot based on the facts, or rather the lack of them. That's not to say they are not out there, but I am doubting that they are if nothing has been found yet. (I do however think the Yeti is real)

I saw a commercial last night on Nat Geo that some paranormal group is going to be investigating Big Foot and they showing this footage during the preview. It's coming on Sunday night so if anyone is interested, there it is.

The guy who filmed it said it was a hoax, maybe 2 years ago or so.

I remember that. I saw it on one of those news magazine shows,

dont remember which one, like Dateline or 20/20 something like

that. They told all about how they faked it.

without making a judgement on the film at all, it's also possible for people to seek notoriety by claiming they were responsible now, years after the fact. i'm just saying it can go both ways.

.

Patterson denied it even up to his death. Here is a link with some details about Phillip Morris who Cheryl had mentioned as claiming to make the suit Patterson used.

.

Philip Morris Story

"They insisted that the victim animals simply had died of dog bites from dogs or other animals. They suggested that disease might have been responsible for one animal's death. They denied that the victims had been exsanguinated, as many witnesses had claimed, and even suggested that the puncture wounds reported might be from barbed wire. Callers reminded them that some wounds were deep enough to reach into the victims' lungs, that the flesh was not torn as in dog bites, that signs of struggles were inexplicably missing, and that corpses did not decay normally, but their arguments were brushed aside. Also brushed aside were callers' attempts to bring extraterrestrials into the conversation.

When the recording ended. I rewound it and played it again and again. I still could not believe what I was hearing. The callers had the skeptics pinned against the ropes from the very first call." - Scott Corrales

More than 40 years later, people are still debating the veracity of the Patterson-Gimlin footage. What do you think?

I blogged about it today.

Was it a hoax? Was it real? Who makes the more compelling argument.

I have an opinion, but I haven't expressed it. I want to see what others think.

I say hoax. It really does look like a gorilla suit (be it not the worst one in the world but still). No muscle movement can be seen at all. If you look close I can maybe see some fabric movement but only in certain places. It walks like a human just going along. As with any wild animal I would assume that once it noticed the person it would either flee or attack (that great old fight or flight instinct even we have). Plus, it seems intentionally shaky so you cant see it very well. I mean come on, Iv held a camera before (even a big shoulder one for drama) and never shook this much. That alone makes me suspicious. How big the motion is. Side to side up down up down. I think I even saw it go in circles at one point. And then there is the fact the "big foot" keeps remembering to look back for a good shot. Honestly, I am surprised they didnt have the guy wave……not saying big foot isnt real mind you! I still believe there are animals out there we have yet to "discover". But this certainly isnt one of them…..sad to say hoax not proof

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

(1) eat less,

(2) don’t ask for money all the time,

(3) are easier to train,

(4) normally come when called,

(5) never ask to drive the car,

(6) don’t smoke or drink,

(7) don’t want to wear your clothes,

(8) don’t have to buy the latest fashions,

(9) don’t need a gazillion dollars for college and

(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ..

Having JD there is a real boon for the interview Whammies. His catch on the muscle banding was a great catch. The film was to grainy for me to call it muscle banding

or a pasted costume. Just recently in the Crypto section Dover has posted a clip that deserves looking at as well. That clip looks as though it is a piece of a larger

production though. /laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />
