In SoCal we have rattlesnakes in the open spaces, mountain lions, coyotes ... and of course bears in the mountains. I'm sure I'm missing some, but that's what comes to mind.

In my neighborhood, we do have coyotes, and they are becoming more bold because their hilly habitat has just about all been taken over by people in the area. Not too far away are hiking and biking trails where people have been killed in recent years by mountain lions. It's rare for attacks to happen in my surrounding cities, but they do, especially when hikers or bikers are alone.

Black panthers? They scare me. LOL

I remember the US being infested with black panthers back in the 70's. Some of those cats were scary big. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Seriously, it's probably exotic pets gone wild. It's always the doofus least able to be responsible with a wild animal that ends up getting one.

There are some posters on the various cryptozoology forums that don't believe that large black cats do exist in the wild in the UK and the US. I have had 2 different people tell me that they have seen them in the hills of eastern Kentucky and they were definitely not domestic cats. I have seen several clips and most don't have any objects to contrast the actual size to. I am including a link, hope it works, that shows recent footage of a larger black cat in the UK that was filmed crossing a railroad track that was confirmed 4'8" across, interesting footage to me. I think the reports are much too numerous to dismiss them all as some type of misidentification of a domestic cat. The debate goes on as usual.

There are strange animals where I live. Eastern pa does not have cougars, yet I have seen one when riding.

Pa game commision, has been tracking them for over a year in my area. There have been other sightings.

Pictures have been taken and posted of the cougar, (may not be the same one) in white clay state park.

Also, reports in fairhill, md which is a 5600 acre reserve. I live, right beside the mason dixon line, and surrounded by state park land.

The game wardens believe exotic pets are getting loose, or intentionally being turned into the wild.

Cougars are very dangerous. Nothing in our area is a threat to horses. But there have been problems reported with horses, breaking fencing down, and gates.

People are edgy here. Some very vaulable horses, are in my area. Smarty Jones and Barbaro were stabled and trained here at one time. It's a very horsey area. Fairhill, has one of the best thoroughbreed training centers in the country.

Coyotes have made it to our area. A lady's poodle was taken by one. The game wardens explained, the coyotes are breeding with foxes. now making for a strange new looking breed. We had large silver like foxes on our property, I've wondered about them, because red or brown foxes are native to our area. I don't let my cats outside anymore!
