When Pablo Picasso visited the newly-discovered Lascaux caves, in the Dordogne, in 1940, he emerged from them saying of modern art, "We have discovered nothing".

That is a great site for viewing the paintings. I have been fascinated with Lascaux for many years.

	Thank you.

K8 - this is a FABULOUS website. I teach art history and use this site in class. The art truly is amazing - and you are absolutely right - it is amazing that visual images have been a part of our history from the beginning.

this is one of the coolest sites i've ever found...it's in french, but all you have to do it click on 'Visite de la grotte' and you will enter for an amazing trip thru the caves of Lascaux. these are now closed to the public and only open sporadically for study, i believe, due to the damage from condensation among other things.

being an artist, i am entranced and intrigued by the art here. the size of some of the paintings for one thing and the way the contours of the rock wall was used for dimensional effect blows my mind. the idea that the need to creat art for whatever purpose is deeply rooted from ancient times touches me.
