By Bruce Kabat | Tuesday, July 21, 2009, 11:50 AM

Just received this press release from Cameron Park Zoo:

Cameron Park Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the death of Wrinkles, a 38-year-old White rhinoceros, who died Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 10:00 pm. Wrinkles was under veterinary care for digestive issues and appeared to be in the early stages of renal failure due to her advanced age. The exact cause of death is pending the completion of the necropsy (animal autopsy).

Geriatric care of animals like Wrinkles is an increasing emphasis at Cameron Park Zoo, because animals are living longer in captivity as a result of ever improving medical and husbandry techniques. Although, staff understands that the increasing age of animals in the collection means they will eventually have to say goodbye, it is still very difficult and all of us at Cameron Park Zoo are mourning Wrinkles’ passing.

Wrinkles was one of the first animals to arrive at Cameron Park Zoo when it opened in 1993 and has been a favorite of staff and guests alike. She is one of three White rhinos in the collection. Although, White rhinos have been known to reach up to 50 years of age, the average lifespan is 35-40 years.
