I just read about this. Very sad to waste your talent to drugs and die so young.

RIP

When this occurs, dissent becomes an object of surprise, if not resentment.

Such a tragic waste.

I hope she is finally at peace.

Sadly I figured drugs and alcohol would take this very talented woman at a young age. Wonder what her demons were. RIP Ms Winehouse /sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

She had bipolar disorder and refused to take medication for it, choosing to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol instead.

Such a great talent who just couldn't overcome her demons. RIP Amy Winehouse.

May I share a memory?

I was in a hotel in Dublin Ireland (I think it was 2007?) when Amy Winehouse was playing a local venue, the Ambassador. Her career was now taking off big time. Anyway back to the hotel, there was Amy; her star was on the upswing, well known and being quietly interviewed by a local music magazine "The Hot Press" in a corner of the room.

A little girl in her beautiful white dress was visiting the hotel having a lunch out with her family after making her first Holy Communion, one of the Catholic religious rights of passage at the age of 7 or so, she smilingly skipped over to her and with the precociousness of a child said something akin to “I really like your singing” mentioning whatever song was in the charts at the time.

Her mother immediately and somewhat embarrassed, quickly went to fetch her daughter apologising for the interruption.

Amy smiling, then said to the little girl “would you like your photo with me”, the little one beamed as she lifted her on her knee, “Does Mummy have a camera”, giving a nod to the child’s mother who quickly fetched her camera and has what must now be a cherished personal memory of a sweet and gentle person who made time for a little one in a kind and gentle manner.

Amy Winehouse R.I.P. May her troubled soul be at peace now.

Ah, beautiful story. Thank you for sharing this. As messed up as the drugs made her life, this isn't the first story I've heard of her like this. Loved her music. I wasn't surprised, but I was still incredibly sad. :*( You're right. May she finally find the peace she so desperately needed in life.
