Well now, this just plain sucks.

RIP in Mr. Paul.

I had a Les Paul Custom, black and white with gold trim, pretty much the same guitar as above.

It was a beast of a guitar with active pickups… I bought it for 800 bucks and sold it for nearly 2k.

The only thing I didn't like was the mass… It was like a log hanging around your neck.

Definitely a pioneer in guitar construction lost.

Edit: The yr. model I sold is more sought after than a newer one… Just looked online and the average new LP Custom is 4k or more. Wonder if they will go up even more?

Probably the vintage ones…you always hear various guitar players commenting on the "starburst"models from the 50s being the best…usually the 1956-59 era. I remember reading an interview w/David Gilmour doing guitar talk. One of the subjects brought up was the poor quality of almost everything that isn't custom crafted to order. Gilmour was commenting on the state of Fender guitars and how he'd recently (at that time) been to a Fender warehouse and had to play/check out a couple dozen new Stratocasters until he found one that "sounded right".

I think he's talking about LP… I wasn't saying 'very cool' about someone dying… I was referring to your story about Gilmour.

I wish I could go to the factory and hand pick a new Paul Reed Smith. /wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Dawkins, wanna fight about it? /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

If you want to read a bizarre guitar story try the one about Doug Irwin's struggles to get his guitars back from the Jerry Garcia estate, kinda messed up. He custom built them for Jerry and I think that in his will Jerry wanted the guitars to go back to Irwin….

David Gilmour and the late John Entwistle have/had legendary collections.

Frank Zappa had a release called "Guitar" which features work he did exclusively (I believe) on a guitar that belonged to and was burnt by Jimi Hendrix in Miami that he had rebuilt.

I think there's some strange trail surrounding Clapton's sg/les paul from the cream days.

I'm fascinated by guitar lore which is completely strange as I couldn't play a lick myself….oh well, a monkey needs a hobby.

I have two Les Paul customs. They're not collector's items but I am loath to take them to a gig.

As far as I'm concerned all LP customs are collector items… Most all of the horror stories I've heard of theft etc. revolve around a Gibson.

If you must transport them be very cautious, someone will be looking to snake those gems.

Currently, at my local axe shop there is a baby blue PRS sunburst on display. I covet it overtly but feel the envy from my cased Gibsons and Fenders. Plus my two Kramers.
