Indy Racing League driver Dan Wheldon was killed today in a 15 car accident on lap 12 of the IRL season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Racing is an inherently dangerous sport but today’s race probably more so than most because of the speeds involved. Earlier in the race Wheldon had averaged more than 223 MPH for a lap. He was 33.

That which is unchallenged and exercised as habit rapidly becomes ritual.

When this occurs, dissent becomes an object of surprise, if not resentment.

I'm not an auto racing fan at all (don't get me started) but the real tragedy here is that his two sons which I believe are 9 months and 2 years old will grow up with out a father. My heartfelt best wishes and condolences to the family, hopefully the racing community will do the right thing and set up a fund for his wife and kids. Would be a nice time for the sponsors to step in and do the right thing.

Sad to see him pass away.

What makes me angriest about this whole thing is that drivers had complained that the speeds were too fast at the Las Vegas track, so it's not like they didn't know there was a problem.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

The speeds are sometimes to fast but I can't see the drivers complaining about the speeds and then try to go faster…

I'm not always right but I'm never wrong.

The above are my opinions.

I was under the impression that it wasn't the speed of the track, but the size of the track. It was too small for that kind of traffic and speed. I don't know while it's tragic, it is an occupational hazard. My main concern would be if the IRC or whoever is in charge allowed the race go on amidst inferior conditions, WHATEVER they may be, then they should be held accountable to the full extent of the law for negligence and endangering the safety of all the drivers not just the ones injured.
