It’s Just that Easy

by Karen Frazier, Managing Editor

Hello All:

We’ve had a photo submitted to us twice, and when we gently suggested it came from an iPhone application, the person felt that it was an incorrect assessment and that the photo warranted attention. So I thought I’d give it some and let you decide. Below is the photo which is circulating the Internet urban-legend style. Everyone claims that someone they know captured it on an infrared trap camera. Below is the picture I created, which took me less than 30 seconds on my iPhone. If I’d actually used photoshop, I’m pretty sure I could have gotten the image exact.

Leave your comments below. Is picture number one from an iPhone app?

The picture circulating the Internet

My 30 second iPhone photo.

Do the “ghosts” look the same? Yeah – I get it – I didn’t get the opacity or size quite right, nor did I take the time to tweak it, but I think they are pretty similar. If I flipped the image backwards, it would be almost exact. Thoughts?

I forgot to mention – the iPhone application is called “Ghost Capture Free.” It allows you to choose and place a “ghost” and then mess with the opacity.

    Karen,
Meg sent me that picture with the caption “I can’t explain it.” I couldn’t manipulate it enough to disprove it, but I did not believe it to be what was claimed. I don’t want to injure any sensitive feelings, but I call bogus on the little Indian child photo.

Well the chance for a definitive capture of an entity just got smaller and smaller…This iphone app has been around for a short time and has now destroyed and credibility of any pic or Video…So So sad.

@ghostgrub – true – but I really think that it went out the window as evidence with digital photography and Photoshop. It’s very easy for someone – even me who has very few photo manipulation technical skills – to create a “ghost picture.” The iPhone app just made it even easier than it already was. Even with film, photo manipulation was pretty easy. There was a photographer who would take deliberate double exposures to create ghost photos. All a photo can do is convince the person who captured it. It can’t convince anyone else, I don’t think.

For those of you still insisting this is a real photo of a real ghost girl, below is the girl from the Ghost Capture sight:

Agreed Karen. Unfortunately, with the ease of manipulating photos that is now out there in many forms — apps, photoshop, etc. — I just can’t believe a photo is real unless it was captured by a close friend or family member. And, yes, that is very sad.

i don’t know anything about iphones or there applications. if a phone texts and rings it does for me, lol. but yes, that spirit is definitely the same on both, like you said, just flipped the other way, like mirror image. definitely fake i think.

I have to admit to being genuinely stumped here. I still have people telling me the photo is genuine. I am becoming quite clear, however, about why we have a credibility problem in this field. I wonder if the person originally circulating the photo is the one selling the app or something.

It’s so obvious, don’t sweat it Karen. The real amazing thing is that beautiful buck in the picture. Please tell me that’s real?!

I don’t know – I actually thought maybe it was one of those buck targets – but what do I know???

Image one – my ghost vs. their ghost, side by side:

Image two – my ghost working her way to overlaying their “ghost”:

Image three – oh look! It’s a perfect match. Go figure.

I think some people really believe these apps are the real deal.
Then like any other belief, they want others to agree with them.
This inforces their beliefs. Maybe people want to believe these apps are ghosts so much, they don’t listen to the explanation and proof.Just how it is sometimes. I think maybe look at how the photo is presented by the person and not so much the photo. This tells you even if you should look at the photo. wink

We actually had this very “ghost” show up in a picture that was sent to us as well. This one sure gets around! LoL
