Is This Paranormal? What Do You Think?

by Karen Frazier, Managing Editor
Paranormal Underground

Here is a sequence of events that happened during an investigation of a hotel with a haunted reputation. What do you think? Is there enough here for evidence of the paranormal? If not, what would be necessary to convince you? To comment, click on the post title and then scroll to the bottom of your screen. We look forward to your comments. You can listen to the EVPs mentioned in this post in our video gallery.

1. A guest sleeping in the hotel room the night before tells of dreams of someone screaming in their face all night. An investigation team sets up shop in that room that evening.
2. Once in the room, investigator notices the lens of SLR camera making whirring noises repeatedly.
3. Investigator sets camera down on a flat surface to see if whirring noises stop.
4. Batteries in investigator’s digital video camera – which are fresh and brand-new – die.
5. Investigator says out loud to the room, “Please don’t kill my camera – I can’t afford to lose another one.”
6. Video camera comes back on.
7. Investigator says, “Thank you!”
8. Video camera dies again.
9. Investigator picks up SLR camera by the sides and tilts it up to see if there is something causing the lens to whir.
10. Camera flashes in investigator’s face. This has never happened before.
11. Another investigator in the room says, “So you like (investigator #1).”
12. Video camera comes back on.
13. Investigator says, “If you have something you’d like to say to me, you may speak into the little red light here.”
14. On review of digital voice recorder, there is a scream and a grunt immediately following that statement. It was not heard in the room at the time.
15. On review of SLR, no picture was taken at the time the camera flashed in investigator’s face. Not only that, but it has never happened before or since.
16. Two members of the team hear a whisper saying, “hey” off to the corner of the room. They are unable to find it on any review of the recordings. They check the hall and adjacent rooms. No one is there. No one in the room remembers whispering.
17. Upon leaving the room, the video camera begins to function normally, and functions well for the rest of the evening.
18. Walking away from the room, one investigator comments, “That was an interesting room,” and the other responds, “Yes it was.” At the same time on further review of the digital voice recording, there is a voice heard humming, another voice heard saying, “hello” and a third deep, rumbling voice that sounds like a 45 RPM record being played on 33. The third voice and the humming can only be heard using headphones.

That’s it. Is it enough? What do you think?

I think this would supply a good solid base for further investigation and documentation. I think all alternatives should be thoroughly investigated first.

Dreams-I personally wouldn’t count that for more than an interesting side note to the story as a whole. I’ve had stranger dreams than I care to admit to, lol.

As a photographer, I’ve had cameras malfunction–not as much with my SLRs, but it happens. Flashes can be set off without taking pictures, depending on the type. I do it all the time to test lighting with my light meter. And I know weather conditions/temperature changes (I’m not talking cold spots, but outside, natural conditions–ie, bringing camera in from the cold into warm too fast) sometimes affects the way equipment works.

    Just my two cents…

It sounds paranormal to me, but of course, everything requires further investigation. Definitely something going on there, though. Also sounds like an experience I would love to have!

Sounds like low battery or poor contact. I’m curious about the testimony about the batteries being “new”. Most video cameras cameras I’ve seen have their own rechargeable, not that it makes a whole lot of difference, but it does make me wonder why he would put it that way. Seems to be to steer perception.

With batteries, regardless of whether a charger says they’re full or not, along with “new” batteries off the shelf, there is no real way to know if they are good. Their charge can only be approximated and many things can influence how well they charge, as well as what the charging circuit think the level of charge is.

Batteries dying with no scientific explanation appears to be a common experience within most paranormal investigative teams
My opinion is that unseen entities require an energy vortex to be able to exist. This vortex “saps” the energy from batteries and also from the living individuals in the area
It would be interesting to establish whether the investigators felt “drained” after their experience in this room?
The issue of whether this is enough evidence to label this episode “paranormal”
It depends on who’s asking the question. I have experienced “psychic” episodes all my life and have taken years delving into research concerning psychosis, pschyzophrenia, bi-polar conditions etc. I have also dedicated my life to the study of religion and philosophy. I have come to the conclusion that we are what we are and I have no personal doubt that other dimensions exist and that beings are able to travel from one dimension to another. Sadly I am also extremely aware that there is NO method of categorically proving to others that the paranormal exists

Spirits do not feed on batteries they feed on human energy. Groups need to invest into a battery tester then test them before use. A working piece of equipment is no indicator of good batteries and weather conditions have an effect on batteries also. Even batteries out of the package can be bad.
With that said; Is this enough to label it paranormal. Absolutely not. What I see here are barely clues but may warrant an investigation based on the experience. Just from the information provided though, all I can see is a short ghost hunt with some interesting phenomena. We also must not forget that EVP is electronic voice phenomena NOT spirit voices. Big difference.
